This river was originally named Rio de las Animas Perdidas by the Spaniards. This name translates into English as the River of Lost Souls. This is the last free flowing river in Colorado. This status will be lost when the Animas-La Plata Projects finishes so that water can be pumped to Lake Nighthorse to satisfy the Southern Ute tribal water rights claims associated with the Colorado Ute Settlement Act amendments of 2000.
